If you are currently in foster care or have been in the past, there are programs and resources available to help you succeed. From financial aid and scholarships to academic and personal support, this page connects you with services designed to meet your unique needs.

Washington State Passport to Careers – Help for Former Foster Youth

Have you ever been in foster care? Do you want to continue your education or start a career in a trade?

The Passport to Careers program can assist you on your journey toward a postsecondary education or apprenticeship. It provides financial assistance and support services, if you meet the following criteria:

  • Foster Care: You were in the care of the Washington State, tribal, or federal foster care system, or experienced unaccompanied homelessness. (See chart at right for eligibility dates.)
  • State Resident: You are a resident of Washington, or your case is based in Washington State.
  • Eligible Student:
    • You are or will be enrolled at least half-time in an eligible institution of higher education or a recognized pre-apprenticeship or registered apprenticeship program in Washington before turning 22.
    • You are not planning to pursue a degree in theology.
    • You have not yet earned a bachelor’s degree.

Passport to College

Through the Passport to College program, students receive support services from college staff, a scholarship that assists with the cost of attending college, and priority consideration for the State Need Grant and State Work Study programs.

Passport to Apprenticeships

The Passport to Apprenticeship Opportunities program will assist students participating in registered apprenticeship or pre-apprenticeship programs with covering costs such as tuition, fees, work clothes, and occupation-related tools.

TRIO Programs

The Federal TRIO Programs (TRIO) are Federal outreach and student services programs designed to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

 

Casey Family Programs

Casey Family Programs works directly with children and families to develop and demonstrate effective, practical solutions to safely reduce the need for foster care, improve well-being, and secure safe and lifelong families for every single child in our care. 

 

College Success Foundation

Coaches and supports students from low socioeconomic backgrounds to prepare for and graduate from college as transformational leaders in order to forge a just and equitable society.

 

Washington Financial Aid Association

The mission of the Washington Financial Aid Association is to effectively serve the interests and needs of its membership and constituents through the coordination of financial aid information, programs and activities.
